GreenYour was started by a group of environmental experts, writers and researchers who felt the need for an online resource that people could turn to for answers on how to “green” anything.
Whether you want to green your lighting and your heating, or your dating and your voting, GreenYour guides you from important facts and actionable tips to cutting-edge products you can click and buy – allowing you to cross items off your green "to do" list. "While people are increasingly aware of the world's environmental problems, it's still far too hard to find clear, reliable information on what to do and how to get it done,” says Andrew Shapiro, co-founder of GreenYour. "To help, we engaged environmental experts and writers to build GreenYour. Our goal is to create an easy-to-use resource for anyone to green just about anything." Launching with more than 2,000 pages of facts, tips, and products, GreenYour seeks to serve as a trusted source on anyone's path to living a greener life. From healthy cleaning products and energy-efficient appliances to cool gifts and hot vacation spots, users can find thousands of ways to improve their lives and the environment. “Finally there is a place that connects people with good, green products and the latest research on what is best for them and the planet,” says Elizabeth Rogers, Creative Advisor to GreenYour and author of the New York Times best-seller, The Green Book. Built on an open-source content development platform, GreenYour gives environmental experts the ability to contribute information in their particular areas of knowledge – allowing GreenYour to feature timely recommendations from leading thinkers and organisations.
A GreenYour product must meet one or more of the following: 1. Green Certification: The product or its principal components are certified and labeled by a credible environmental organisation such as EPA’s Energy Star program, USDA Organic, Greenguard, Green Seal, EcoLogo, or the Forest Stewardship Council.
2. Green Attributes: The product or its principal components are extracted, harvested, manufactured, distributed, consumed, or disposed in an environmentally or socially responsible way. Green attributes also can relate to materials or ingredients that are ecologically responsible in nature, such as post-consumer recycled content paper, organic cotton, or bamboo, as well as socially responsible business practices, such as Fair Trade practices. 3. Green Yield: The product allows the consumer to reduce his or her direct greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, water use, or waste. Examples include reusable water bottles, public transportation, CFL lightbulbs, or low-flow fixtures.
