The Green is the first phase of Listerhills Sustainable Student Village, a key component of Hayaat Group's proposed £150 million investment in the Learning Quarter, whose objective is to deliver a centre of excellence for Yorkshire through design, education and innovation.
Originally conceived as part of the Labour Government's objectives to regenerate brownfield sites, The Green is a rare example of private and public sector combining effectively to deliver an innovative and socially important project on time and on budget.
The Green provides modern and comfortable accommodation for 1,026 students, but more importantly it is specifically designed to set a blueprint for sustainable living, encouraging students to adapt lifestyles that save energy and reduce waste. Central heating and hot water are powered by solar panels; the buildings are efficiently insulated to reduce heat loss; rain water is collected, purified and used for a variety of purposes; and all energy and water usage is monitored and metered so that each student knows exactly how much they are using and can compare with what neighbouring apartments and individuals are consuming.
Sustainable Credentials
In its two years of operation, The Green has consumed on average almost 25% less energy than equivalent student accommodation elsewhere in the UK. Indeed, it has been so successfully designed and constructed that it has achieved one of the highest scores under the BREEAM scoring system.
BREEAM is the world's leading design and assessment method for sustainable buildings, setting the standard for best practice in sustainable building design, construction and operation. It has become one of the most comprehensive and widely recognised measures of a building's environmental performance, with more than 1 million buildings assessed around the world to date.
Under the BREEAM rating scheme, The Green achieved a ground-breaking score of 95.05%, recognised by BREEAM as "Outstanding". The Green is one of only fifteen buildings in the world to achieve this gold standard, and one of the top 1% sustainably designed buildings in the world. As a result, it is the most sustainable building in the world of all 1,000,000 buildings registered by BREEAM.
In addition to its BREEAM rating, The Green has won numerous other awards, including: 2012 Considerate Constructors' Gold Award, 2012 LABC Building Excellence Award, 2012 Green Build Award, 2012 Building Awards, 2012 Property Industry Awards, the 2012 Green Apple Award and, most recently, the College and Universities Business Officers' Best Student Housing Award 2012.
