Azraq launches Magic Mangroves campaign

Local marine conservation organisation, Azraq has launched its fourth mission, focusing on the importance of mangrove trees in keeping oceans healthy. The launch coincides with a social awareness campaign, as well as brand new activities being launched such as mangrove tree planting and kayak opportunities in Ajman and school presentations on the topic.

The campaign, entitled Magic Mangroves aims to highlight the extensive mangroves forests in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and how they work to keep coastal zones healthy.

Natalie Banks, Managing Director of Azraq, stated that mangroves in the UAE have grown to become the largest in the Arabian Gulf coast, covering thousands of hectares along the UAE coastline.

“Mangrove forest were once generally dismissed as swampy wastelands, however they are provide an important role in coastal defence, as nursery areas for a range of species including threatened and endangered animals, providing carbon storage and boosting local economies,” Ms Banks said.

“I think this quote from a fisherman in Southern Thailand defines clearly the role of mangrove forests; ‘if there are no mangrove forests, then the sea will have no meaning … it is like having a tree with no roots, for the mangroves are the roots of the sea.”

The most common species of mangrove in the UAE are the avicennia commonly called the grey or white mangrove.

Within the UAE there are approximately 4,000 hectares of mangrove forest, but while the country has boosted their forests, globally mangrove trees are in trouble, disappearing three to five times faster than forests as a whole.

“Mangroves represent less than 0.4% of the world’s forest and have significantly reduced globally due to development, polluting industries and climate change and large-scale shrimp aquaculture,” Ms Banks said.

“Our new campaign launch aims to increase the importance of mangrove forests, and to help the planet and the oceans by arranging planting days for both corporate organisations as part of their social responsibility, as well as for the community at large, not just in Ajman but in other emirates also”

This is yet another example of Azraq illustrating how small changes can have big impacts.
